January 1 - The implementation of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom after the latter formally left the European Union after its decision to withdraw in 2016, known as Brexit. January 5 - Leaders and heads of delegations to the Gulf summit in Al-Ula in Saudi Arabia sign a document of principles establishing an end to the diplomatic crisis with Qatar, which lasted for more than three years. January 6 – Protesters storm the United States Capitol, disrupting the US Congress' ratification of the 2020 US presidential election.
