Khartoum is a city in Sudan and the capital of the Khartoum Directorate. A city built by the Egyptians in Sudan in the year 1822 on the northern bank of the Blue Nile when it met the White Nile. It was destroyed in 1885 at the time of the Mahdist revolution, and it was re-planned in 1898. Bridges on the Nile connect it to Khartoum North and Omdurman. The headquarters of the Sudanese University (Gordon Zaman College) and a branch of the Egyptian University of Cairo.
