Cough is the sudden expulsion of air from large breathing passages, usually repeatedly, and there are three stages: inhalation, exhalation, and violent release of air from the lungs, with it being a distinctive sound of cough.

Cough is a preventative response that can help clear fluids, irritants, foreign particles and microbes from the breathing passages.

Frequent coughing is a sign of diseases caused by viruses such as influenza and bacteria such as pneumonia.

Frequent coughing may be due to a respiratory infection. It may be due to suffocation, smoking and air pollution, as well as asthma, acid reflux disease in the esophagus, drip behind the nose, chronic bronchitis, lung tumors, and heart failure. There are also medicines that can cause coughing, such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
