Pere Aragonès i Garcia (Pineda de Mar, Maresme, 16 November 1982) is a Catalan politician, President of the Generalitat de Catalunya since 24 May 2021. He was Vice President of the Generalitat de Catalunya and Minister of Economy and Finance since May 19, 2018. Following the disqualification of Quim Torra, on September 30, 2020, he assumed the Presidency of the Generalitat de Catalunya. On November 20, 2020, it was confirmed that he would be the candidate for the Republican Left for the Presidency of the Generalitat in the 202 parliamentary elections. Finally, at the investiture session held on May 21, 2021, he was sworn in as President. of the Generalitat de Catalunya, elected with 74 affirmative votes and 61 negative votes.


He is the grandson of Josep Aragonès i Montsant, a hotel and textile businessman, mayor of Pineda de Mar during the Franco regime, and later, after the integration of Reforma Democràtica de Catalunya (of which he was president) into Aliança Popular de Catalunya, also during the democratic period. His father, Pere Aragonès Poch, was an independent councilor on the Pineda de Mar Convergence list between 1991 and 1995. He has worked in a law firm specializing in legal advice to companies and public administrations, has collaborated as a researcher with the Ignasi Villalonga Institute of Economics and Business, and as a lecturer at the University of Perpignan. In June 2017 he married Janina Juli and in March 2019 his daughter Claudia was born.

JERC and Member of Parliament

Pere Aragonès claims to have begun to become politically aware as a result of the events of Operation Garzón. He joined the Joventuts d'Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (JERC) in 1998, and the ERC in 2000. Between 1999 and 2007 he was part of the national leadership of the JERC.
