Biography

Roberto Gil made his debut with the first team of Valencia CF in 1959 and remained until his retirement in the middle of the 1970-71 campaign, during the entire decade of the 60s he shared a team with other legends of the history of Valencia such as Manolo Mestre, Abelardo González, Waldo Machado, Vicente Guillot and Paquito García, with whom you make a pair in the middle of the field well remembered. Throughout his career, he contributed to obtaining 2 Copes de Fires titles, 1 Cup and 1 League for at Valencia CF. In 1966, at the Camp Nou, he scored one of the few goals that are remembered in the Spanish League from outside the goal area. But perhaps the most famous moment that the fans remember of him was when as captain he lifted, soberly and in accordance with his style, the trophy of the Cup of 1967 in the box of the Santiago Bernabéu, after beating the Athletic Club by 1-2, goals from Jara and Paquito. He shook Franco's hand with a soft hand, and lifted the trophy while leaving Muñoz Grandes with his hand outstretched, without greeting him. On the managerial side of the merengot team, he caused the signings of Quique Sánchez Flores , Arroyo, Leonardo de Araujo, Lubo Penev or Guus Hiddink.
