For the person from whom this name is derived, see Jacob.The State of Israel (Hebrew: מדינת ישראל, Medinat Yisra'el; Arabic: دولة إسرائيل, Dawlat Isrā'īl) is a country located in Southwest Asia, in the Levant part of the Middle East, on the southeastern side of the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria and Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest. Israel was created in 1948. The population is now about 7 million, the majority Jews. Although it is inhabited by Jews and Arabs, it is the only Jewish state. Jerusalem was its capital and seat of government and Tel Aviv was the largest city; Tel Aviv also has embassies of other countries. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that is considered a liberal democracy because of its political rights and civil liberties. Among these, Israel is considered the region’s most advanced in press freedom, business regulation, economic competition, economic freedom, and human development.
