Dutch (English: Dutch, Dutch: Nederlands) is a West Germanic language spoken by more than 22 million people as a native, and more than 5 million as a second language. Most of its native inhabitants live in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Surinam, including small groups in parts of France, Germany and other former Dutch colonies. The language is very close to other West Germanic languages (e.g., English, West Frisian, and Inaleman) and somewhat distant from the North Germanic Language. Dutch is the origin language of several other creoles and the Afrikaans language, one of the official languages of South Africa and the most widely understood language in the country of Namibia. Dutch and Afrikaans still get along well today.
