Draupadí Murmúová (June 20, 1958 Uparbéda, Odisha) is an Indian politician and the country's president from 2022. He comes from the Santal ethnic group in the Indian state of Odisha. She graduated from Rama Devi State University for Women, Bhubaneswar. She was dedicated to promoting the rights of this previously isolated ethnic group. In the years 1979-1983 she worked in the Ministry of Irrigation and Power, from 1997 as a teacher, in 2000-2004 then in the Odisha State Government. Between 2015 and 2021, she was the governor of the state of Jharkhand. In 2022, she was nominated for the position of president by the ruling Indian People's Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She won the election on July 18 and took office on July 25, 2022. She thus became the 15th head of state of India and the second woman in this position, when Pratibha Pátilová was the first president in 2007–2012.
