Frederick VIII (German: Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Karl von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg; June 3, 1843 - May 14, 1912) was King of Denmark from 1906 to 1912.


The future King Frederik was born on June 3, 1843 as the son of the successor and future Danish King Christian IX. and his wife the future Queen Luisa of Hesse-Kassel. He succeeded the throne in 1863, when his father ascended the Danish throne. His younger brother William ascended the Greek throne in 1863 as King George I only briefly (October 30) before his father became king and Frederik the crown prince (November 15). Frederick VIII became King of Denmark after the death of his father on January 29, 1906, and remained so until his death on May 14, 1912. He was the second Danish King of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg dynasty. His official title was: Frederick VIII, by the grace of God the King of Denmark, Wend and Goths, Duke of Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn, Dithmarschen, Lauenburg and Oldenburg.


As crown prince, on July 28, 1869, Frederik married Swedish Princess Luisa, the daughter of King Charles XV of Sweden. and his wife Luisa Orange-Nasavska. Together they had 4 sons and 4 daughters: Kristián (1870–1947), later King Christian X of Denmark. Carl of Denmark (1872–1957), later King Haakon VII of Norway. Luisa Dánská (1875–1906), in 1896 she married Prince Friedrich Schaumburg-Lippe Harald of Denmark (1876–1949) Ingeborg of Denmark (1878–1958), married Prince Carl of Sweden and Norway, Duke of Västergötland Thyra Dánská (1880–1945) - without children Gustav Dánský (1887–1944) - without children Dagmar Dánská (1890–1961) Frederik VIII. he was the 1065th Knight of the Spanish Order of the Golden Fleece, the 806th Knight of the British Garter Order in 1896 and the 152nd Grand Cruiser of the Portuguese Order of the Tower and Sword. He died in Hamburg on May 14, 1912 and was buried in Roskilde Cathedral, the final resting place of the Danish royal family.
