Rabbit Island (formerly also Snake Island) is an island on the Lipno Dam. The area of the island is approximately 700 m². The island is located about 400 meters from the shipyard in Lipno nad Vltavou. The island can only be reached by boat.

History

Rabbits were planted on the island around 2010, making it a tourist attraction. Tourists used to come here to feed and pet rabbits. The idea to plant rabbits here belongs to the mayor of Lipno nad Vltavou, inspired by the Japanese island of Okunošima. He therefore had the grass cut and built feeders for the rabbits. However, the rabbits were not on the island all year round, they moved to rabbit houses in mid-November and returned here at the beginning of April. Apart from rabbits, guinea pigs lived on the island. Since August 2020, rabbits have not stayed on the island. The reason for their withdrawal was unruly tourists who endangered the animals or put their unwanted pets on the island - most often dogs. In August 2020, this resulted in injuries to several rabbits and guinea pigs.
