Leonid Kravchuk
Leonid Makarovich Kravchuk (Ukrainian оеонід Макарович Кравчук; January 10, 1934, Żytyń Wielki, Poland, now Ukraine - May 10, 2022) was a Ukrainian politician. From December 1991 to July 1994, he was the first Ukrainian president.
Political activity
Kravchuk was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and the first secretary of the Ukrainian CPSU since 1990. He left the party in August 1991. On December 8, 1991, he signed the so-called White Tower Agreement on the Establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for Ukraine, which ended the existence of the Soviet Union.5. December 1991 was elected the first President of Ukraine. He was not yet as strong a president as his successor. In 1994, he was defeated in the presidential election by Leonid Kuchma. After leaving the presidency, he worked for the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine. He later left politics.
