The Wikimedia Foundation (officially English Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., abbreviated WMF) is a foundation that manages wiki projects Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, Wikicests, Wikinews, Wikispecies, Wikiversity and others (especially development and coordination projects) . It was established on June 20, 2003 by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales as a non-profit organization under the laws of the State of Florida (USA). free of charge. As part of the foundation's founding, Wales also transferred ownership of all Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Nupedia domain names to the foundation, including all copyrights to all material relating to these projects, which he or his company Bomis owned at the time. He also donated computer equipment to the foundation, on which the foundation's projects run. Bomis also currently finances some projects for operating and connecting to the Internet. The rest of the funding is raised by the foundation on a voluntary basis. The Wikimedia Foundation is a public charity and as such is exempt from federal income tax under section 501 (c) (3) of the United States Tax Act. Donations to this foundation can be deducted from taxes in the United States and other countries. The name "Wikimedia" was suggested in March 2003 by Sheldon Rampton. The name is sometimes criticized for its resemblance to Wikipedia and MediaWiki, which sometimes leads to misunderstandings.

Affiliates

The so-called the branches complement the international activities of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikimedia Czech Republic

The Wikimedia Czech Republic association is based in the Czech Republic, the aim of which is primarily to promote and support free creation in the Czech Republic, focusing on Wikimedia Foundation projects.
