Nancy Patricia Pelosi (pronounced Pelosi, née D'Alesandro; * March 26, 1940, Baltimore, Maryland) is an American Democratic politician and, as of 2019, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. She already held this position in 2007-2011. She thus became the first woman, the first citizen of the state of California and an Italian-American to head the lower house of Congress, as well as the first re-elected president since 1955. She is the second highest-ranking woman in the history of elected offices of the United States after Vice President Kamala Harris. In the order of succession to the office of the US president, she is second in line by virtue of her position, right behind the vice president. On August 2, 2022, despite threats from the Chinese Communist regime, Pelosi visited Taiwan, becoming the highest-ranking American representative to visit the island in the last 25 years.
