The President of India is the head of state of India and the commander-in-chief of its armed forces. The president is elected by an electorate composed of members of both houses of parliament and the legislatures of all 28 Indian states. Powers are more or less formal. He appoints the prime minister, the government, all 26 judges of the Supreme Court, but is bound by the recommendation of the prime minister. The term of office of the President of India is five years without the possibility of re-election. The Vice President of India is elected in the same manner as the President. The term of office is five years without the possibility of re-election and does not overlap with the presidential term of office. According to the Constitution, he is the chairman of the upper chamber ex officio.
