Wikimedia Czech Republic (abbreviated Wikimedia ČR, WMČR, English Wikimedia Czech Republic) is a Czech non-governmental non-profit organization, an association established by registration with the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic on March 6, 2008. independent organizations.

Activity

The aim of the Wikimedia ČR association is primarily to promote and support free creation in the Czech Republic, focusing on the projects of the Wikimedia Foundation (the most famous of which is Wikipedia). It also includes organizational assistance in organizing events, assistance in matters of free licenses, mediation of communication with authors of free materials and mediation of communication between the Czech public and the Wikimedia Foundation (operated by Wikipedia). The association also organizes various courses and trainings and covers meetings and activities of local groups of wikipedians throughout the country. Starting in 2009, the main event of the Wikimedia ČR association, intended for the community of contributors and the public, is the annual Wikikonference. On 17-19. May 2019, the association in Prague, in cooperation with the Wikimedia Foundation, organized a worldwide meeting of Wikimedia Hackathon 2019 developers with 220 participants from 47 countries. The association presents its activities at exhibitions (Autumn Book Fair, NGO market, LinuxExpo) in interviews for the media. In 2009–2013, Wikimedia ČR published the periodical Wikimedium (ten issues were published).

Competitions

The association tries to stimulate the development of the Czech Wikipedia and the involvement of the public in its creation, among other things, by organizing competitions. In 2009–2011, four runs of the competition called the Czech Wikipedia Development Awards took place. photographs of cultural monuments, made available under a free license in the Wikimedia Commons repository, including many Czech ones. The photographing of monuments was freely followed in 2018 by the local competition Describe a Monument, focused on the creation and dissemination of articles on cultural monuments on the Czech Wikipedia. The list of monuments for the competition was provided by the National Monuments Institute, another partner was the PROPAMÁTKY website. In the first year of the competition, which took place from 15 January to 15 February 2018 and was attended by a total of 47 wikipedians, over 150 encyclopedic articles were created describing 34 churches, 24 castles, 16 villas, 14 fortresses and some other protected buildings. The second year took place from January 15 to March 15, 2019. In two months, 53 active wikipedists created 655 encyclopedic articles. The third year of the Describe a Monument competition took place from 15 January 2020 to 15 February 2020.

Members and management

The founding members of Wikimedia Czech Republic (then still a civic association) in 2008 were Jan Urbánek, Michal Zlatkovský, Pavel Hrdlička and Jan Kulveit; The representative of the preparatory committee was Jan Urbánek. In 2019, the association had 67 full members. At the beginning of 2017, Petra Pejšová became the first executive director and at the same time the third employee and the first full-time employee. In March 2018, she was replaced in this position by Klára Joklová. According to its statutes, the bodies of the association are the General Meeting, the Chairman, the Board, the Audit Committee and the Executive Director in the following order.
