2012
Like the previous year, 2012 was shaped by the Arab Spring. In Syria, the civil war continued throughout the year; in Egypt, an Islamic constitution was adopted in a referendum amid ongoing protests.
In Europe (especially in the euro zone), the year was particularly marked by the euro crisis. Especially in the countries hard hit by the crisis, Greece, Spain and Italy, there were protests against the European Union's crisis policy and against the policies of their own governments.
In Germany, after the attacks by the right-wing extremist terrorist group NSU were uncovered and various investigation mishaps were uncovered, there were fundamental discussions about the work of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution; the demand for a new ban procedure against the National Democratic Party of Germany became loud. On December 14, 2012, the Federal Council decided by a large majority to apply again to the Federal Constitutional Court for a ban on the NPD. The judges dismissed the request in January 2017.
