Guido Wilhelmus Imbens (born September 3, 1963 in Geldrop) is a Dutch-American economist and university professor. In 2021 he was awarded the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics together with David Card and Joshua Angrist.
Imbens studied at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and the University of Hull until 1986 before moving to the USA. In 1991 he received his Ph.D. at Brown University. He then taught at Harvard University, UCLA and UC Berkeley. He has been a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business since 2012. Guido Imbens conducts research in the fields of econometrics and statistics. His main research interests are the development of statistical methods to identify causal inference using matching, instrument variable estimation, and regression discontinuity analysis. Imben is a Fellow of the Econometric Society (2001) and has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2009. In 2017 he was elected as a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. In 2019 Imbens was appointed editor of Econometrica magazine for four years. In 2020 he was elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
Together with Joshua Angrist, he was awarded the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics in 2021 for their contributions to the analysis of causal relationships.
The two share half of the award, the other half went to David Card, who married economist Susan Athey in 2002. They have three children together.
