January 9: The first income tax is imposed, in England. March 1: The combined Russian and Turkish squadron takes Corfu and a few more islands in the Ionian Sea from the French. July 15: The Rosetta Stone is discovered in Egypt, which will allow the deciphering of Egyptian hieroglyphics. November 9: Napoleon overthrows the Directory, establishes the Consulate, and becomes First Consul. Carl Friedrich Gauss states the fundamental theorem of algebra.
