2012 (MMXII) was a leap year beginning on a Sunday in the Gregorian calendar. It was also the number 2012 anno Dómini or of the Christian Era designation, as well as the twelfth of the third millennium and the third of the years 2010. The General Assembly of the United Nations declared 2012 the international year of cooperatives, thus recognizing their contribution to socioeconomic development, in particular the recognition of poverty reduction, employment and the social integration they generate.[ 1] It was also designated as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for all.[2] and the Year of the Dragon according to the Chinese Horoscope.

January 1: In Nigeria, land conflicts leave a balance of at least 50 dead.[3] In Colombia, mayors and governors of the main cities and departments of the country take office. January 4: Discovery of the first hybrid sharks in Australia.[4] At the bottom of the Antarctic sea, new species are discovered in hot springs.[5] It manages to open a hole in space-time, but with a duration of 40 picoseconds.[6] January 5: in Baghdad and Nasiriya (Iraq) several terrorist attacks against Shia Muslims leave at least 78 dead and dozens injured; this new escalation seeks to incite sectarian violence in the country.[7] January 6th: In Syria, an attack in the capital Damascus leaves at least 26 dead, while the repression of opposition demonstrations by government forces and armed clashes with military rebels leave at least another 35 dead in various regions of the country.[8] In Nigeria terrorist attacks committed in the last two days by the Islamic fundamentalist group Boko Haram against Christians leave at least 28 dead and force a curfew to be imposed in the Nigerian state of Adamawa to contain an escalation that could unleash a sectarian civil war in the country.[9] In Somalia, an aerial bombardment by the Air Force of neighboring Kenya against forces of the Somali Islamic fundamentalist group Al-Shabbaab (linked to Al Qaeda) leaves at least 60 militiamen dead; the bombing is part of the offensive by Kenyan troops to conquer the Somali coastal city of Kismayo under control of Al-Shabbaab, in response to terrorist actions such as the kidnapping of Spanish aid workers.[10] January 8: Jesús Rodríguez Almeida resigned as Attorney General of the Federal District in substitution of Miguel Ángel Mancera, candidate for the Head of Government of the DF. January 10: in the city of Yamrud (Pakistan), a terrorist attack leaves at least 35 dead.[11] January 11: in León (Mexico) the helicopter of the IMSS Medical Center falls. January 13-22: The 2012 First Winter Youth Olympic Games were held in Innsbruck, Austria. January 13: The Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia is partially sunk in Giglio Island with more than 4,000 people on board. This accident leaves 32 dead. January 14: In Guatemala City Otto Pérez takes the presidency. In Iraq, a suicide terrorist attack in the city of Basra leaves at least 53 dead; the victims were pilgrims participating in a Shia Islamic religious holiday.[12] January 15: In Rada (Yemen), an assault force of 400 Al Qaeda terrorists takes control of the city and proclaims an "Islamic emirate", while the civilian population tries to flee fearing a pitched battle when the Yemeni army tries to retake the city.[13] In Guatemala the change of municipal governments is carried out. January 18: In Burma, an explosion causes 3 deaths after the resumption of peace talks.[14] In the United States, the Pentagon estimates 19,000 cases of sexual abuse in the Armed Forces.[15] January 19: Megaupload is closed for copyright infringement.
