2021 Bulgaria bus crash On November 23, at 02:00 local time, a bus from northern Macedonia crashed in western Bulgaria and caught fire. The accident took place on the Stroma Highway near the village of Bosenk in southwestern Sofia. Fifty passengers and two drivers were on the bus. Forty-six people, including 12 children, died in the crash. Seven other passengers suffered burns but survived. This is currently the deadliest road accident in the history of Bulgaria.

Background

According to the European Commission, Bulgaria had the second highest number of road accidents in Europe in 2019. After the incident, the mayor of the nearby town of Pernik told local media that the highway was in poor condition and that accidents were frequent in the area.
