Spanish, Spanish (Spanish: español) or Castellano (Castellano), is a Roman language that originated in the Iberian Peninsula in Europe and is now a universal language with nearly 500 million native speakers (mostly in Spain and the Americas). Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese, and the fourth most spoken language in the world after English, Mandarin Chinese and Hindi. Spanish is a member of the Ibero-Roman language group of the Indo-European language family. The language was formed from several slang Latin dialects in Iberian after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century AD. Spanish is also influenced by Basque, Iberian, Celtic, Visigothic, and other neighboring Ibero-Roman languages. In addition, Spanish has absorbed words from other languages, especially other Roman languages (French, Italian, Romance, Andalusian, Portuguese, Galician, Catalan, Occitan, and Sardinian) as well as Quechua, Nahuatl, and other Native American languages. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and is used as an official language by the European Union, the Organization of American States, the Union of South American States, the Latin American and Caribbean Communities, the African Union and many other international organizations.
