The main meaning of "free"

The next major dictionary to be published was a French-English dictionary by Paul (or Johann) Palsgrave in 1530 [...] and a surviving letter indicating that he and his colleague agreed that no copy should be sold without his permission. The English word "free" has several meanings. The word "free" in the phrase "free encyclopedia" refers first and foremost to the terms of the Wikipedia content license. Texts donated to Wikipedia are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported Document (CC-BY-SA) and GNU Free Documentation (GFDL) licenses. The basic premise is that the copyrights of these texts belong to their authors, but the texts may be freely read, distributed or modified, provided that the modified copies are distributed under the same license. Read the full text of the license to know the exact legal requirements. The purpose of this licensing method is to make reference material freely accessible to all — a body of human knowledge that cannot be restricted or controlled by restrictive use of copyright and that can be used in the most reasonable terms. Shared, without any restrictions; Thus, Wikipedia reverses the trend started by Mr. John Paulsgrave nearly half a millennium ago. Uploading information whose copyright terms are not compatible with GFD and CC-BY-SA is not permitted on Wikipedia and will be removed immediately. The only exception to this rule is that some Wikipedias allow the uploading of certain images and media files under the terms of "fair use". Wikipedia: See fair use. (Some Wikipedias in other languages, such as Spanish, do not allow "fair use" in any way and accept nothing but free content)

Anyone with access to the World Wide Web can read Wikipedia content from wikipedia.org for free. However, this does not mean that Wikipedia is completely non-commercial. Copies of Wikipedia can be sold. CC-BY-SA and GIFF licenses allow money to be charged for the content they cover.
