Cosmos 1408

The Cosmos 1408 (Russian: Космос-1408) was a smart electronic signal satellite (ELINT) operated by the Soviet Union. It was launched into near-Earth orbit on September 16, 1982, replacing Cosmos in 1999. On November 15, 2021, a Russian anti-satellite weapons warhead was destroyed, causing space debris in orbits between 300 and 1,100 kilometers (190 to 680 miles) that posed a risk of a collision with the International Space Station, and therefore the International Space Station crew. (ISS) forced them to take refuge in their escape capsules.
