January 3 - Saudi Arabia cuts diplomatic ties with Iran following an attack on the Saudi embassy and consulate in Iran over the execution of Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia. January 8 - Joaquin Guzman, better known as El Chapo, known in most parts of the world as the most powerful drug trafficker, is arrested after escaping from prison. January 16 - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announces that Iran is fulfilling its obligations under the Comprehensive Joint Action Plan (CJAP), which will allow the United Nations to lift its sanctions on Iran. The next day, the program was launched. January 28 - The World Health Organization announces the outbreak of Zika virus.


February 7 - North Korea launches a long-range rocket, violating several UN treaties and receiving numerous condemnations from around the world. February 12 - Pope Francis and Pope Cyril of Russia sign the Universal Declaration. This was the first such event between the Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church since the separation in 1054.


March 14 - The European Space Agency and the Russian Federal Space Agency jointly launch an Exomars gas tracker orbiter around Mars. March 21 - The International Criminal Court convicts former Congolese First Vice President Jean-Pierre Bomba of war crimes and crimes against humanity. This is the first time this court has convicted someone of sexual violence. March 22 - Three coordinated bombings in Brussels kill 32 people and injure 250 others. ISIL claimed responsibility for the attacks. March 24 - Former Serbian leader Radovan Karadzic is sentenced to 40 years in prison for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the Bosnian war. March 27 - A suicide bomber blew himself up at Golshan Iqbal Park in Lahore, Pakistan, killing more than 70 people and injuring about 193 others. The target of the attack was Christians celebrating Easter.
