David Maria Sassoli (May 30, 1956 Florence, Italy - January 11, 2022 Aviano, Italy) was an Italian Democratic Party politician and journalist. Mr Sassoli has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2009 and President of the European Parliament since his death on 3 July 2019.

Sassol’s career as a journalist began in small newspapers and news agencies. He also worked for seven years as an editor for Il Giorno. He started in 1992 as a journalist and correspondent for TG3 news programs and at the same time worked for Rai Uno and Rai Due news programs. In 1999, Sassol became a special correspondent for the TG1 programs. For ten years, he was responsible for the best-time news broadcasts and reported on many significant events. Sassoli was promoted to deputy director of TG1 in 2007. Sassoli was elected to the European Parliament for the first time in 2009. He was elected to the Central Italian constituency from the list of the Italian Democratic Party. He was elected President in July 2019, and his term lasted until January 2022. In his post-election speech, Sassoli emphasized citizens' faith in the EU project in response to global challenges. In his speech, Mr Sassoli wanted to revitalize European integration and make the EU more responsive to the needs and concerns of its citizens and its growing sense of loss. He focused on youth unemployment, migration, climate change, the digital revolution and new global powers.
