Draupadi Murmu (born 20 June 1958) is an Indian politician who was elected in 2022 as the President of India. Before that, he served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. He represents the Indian People's Party (BJP). Murmu was born in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha state to an adivasi family. He initially worked as a teacher until he entered politics and was twice elected as a legislator in the Odisha state parliament. When the BJP and the Biju Janata Dal collaborated, he served as a state minister in the Naveen Patnaik government from 2000 to 2004. He was responsible for trade, traffic, fish farms and animals. In 2007, he was awarded the Nilakantha Award for the best work as a legislator. After being elected as the governor of Jharkhand in 2015, Murmu is the first woman to hold the position. Ahead of the 2017 presidential election, he was speculated to be the BJP's future presidential candidate, but Ram Nath Kovind was chosen instead. As governor, he has emphasized the importance of education for the native population of India and urged them to avoid alcohol. 21. July 2022 Murmu was elected President of India. She was the first person from the so-called indigenous population, the youngest and the second woman to be elected president. Murmu took office on July 25.
