The coronavirus pandemic in Austria is part of the global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The first infections were detected in the country on 25 February 2020, and on 5 December there were 300,689 confirmed infections, 249,441 improved and 3,757 dead.

Epidemic

On 25 February, the first two COVID-19 infections were confirmed in Austria; there were two Italians arriving in Innsbruck from the Bergamo area. However, the authorities later announced that the first infection in the country had already taken place on 8 February. Authorities initially downplayed the risks, but eventually the entire village and its surroundings were quarantined on March 13th. The day before, the first death had been reported in the country. In late spring, the first wave faded, as elsewhere in Europe. In early autumn 2020, infections began to rise again, and on November 17, strict restrictions were again imposed. Schools switched to distance learning from 17 November to 4 December. In early December, Austria began mass testing with the goal of testing the nation’s population of 9 million before Christmas. Mass testing began first in Vienna and in the worst-affected states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol. The testing is administered by the Austrian army. Mass testing has yielded good results in Slovakia, which has tested its entire population, but has also been criticized as a waste of resources. In November 2021, Austria's interest rate restrictions tightened. In the past, there was an interest rate cap on unvaccinated people and it was extended to everyone. During the lockout, you are only allowed to leave your home for a good reason, which includes going to work, necessary business matters and commuting. Following the entry into force of the restrictions, Austria currently has the strictest corona measures in place in the EU. Austria plans to make coronary vaccination compulsory from the beginning of February.
