A song is music made with a human voice. It is distinguished from speech by the fact that the sound remains at intentionally selected pitches. A musician who sings, that is, uses his or her own voice as an instrument for making and performing music, is called a singer. Singing has always been closely associated with the production of words, and is also often limited to linguistic qualities. Singing can take place, for example, as a solo song and as a monophonic or polyphonic choral song. Singing can also mean a work of art performed by singing.


Singers can be divided into several subclasses according to sound field and sound color, such as sopranos, violas, tenors, baritones and basses. The singer may perform alone or as part of a band or choir. The singer is also called the band's soloist or, as the English quotes, the vocalist. The record may refer to the singer as the performer. Only a few singers in Finland support themselves by performing entirely, but there are many who support themselves by singing part-time or in addition to other work.

History of singing music

Song has probably existed as long as music, since prehistoric times. It is known in all cultures, and its birth is apparently as inevitable an event as the development of colloquial language. In Western music, singing was the most significant part of musical performances from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, after which the development of musical instruments led to the rise of instrumentality as an at least as significant way of producing melodies. In the Middle Ages, vocal music was initially monophonic (monophonic) and often closely associated with religious services, with the church dominating culture. Already in the 400s and 600s, the Gregorian chant became established, the melody of which remained almost unchanged for several centuries. Because church music composers had little opportunity to use their creativity in the melodies, they added new types of words and parts of text, such as tropes and sequences. In the 13th century, a polyphonic song also began to develop, in which one or more sounds in a melody created on the basis of Gregorian tones moved counterpoint to the melody. In secular music, simple, often choral songs were performed in France by troubadours and trouvers, and in Germany by singers and later master singers. During the Renaissance, the sound field of vocal music expanded considerably, and at the same time, melodies in turn became simpler and more complex as styles changed. The best-known composers of the song music of the time were Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Josquin des Prez. In the 1550s and 1610s, a polycoral style of music emerged in Venice, which was the most advanced music of its time and gradually spread to other parts of Europe, marking the transition to Baroque music. In the 17th century, pure or song-accompanied instrumental music began to be the predominant style in secular music, with the exception of operas, which had developed into popular entertainment events during the Renaissance and were further developed by Händel and Alessandro Scarlatti, among others. In church music, vocal works such as Oratorios, Masses, Motets, and Cantatas continued to gain popularity, especially with Bach and Handel. The great composers of classicism, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, also composed vocal works, the most famous of which are Haydn's Oratorios Creation and Seasons, Mozart's Operas and Requiem, and the final part of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. In art music, works consisting of mere vocal parts were already very rare. During the Romantic period, the importance of vocal music grew in the production of many composers, especially in the flutes of Franz Schubert, which he composed several hundred.
