Shireen Abu Akleh
Shireen Abu Akleh (Arab. شيرين أبو عاقلة, Shīrīn ’Abū’ Āqla; April 3, 1971 in Jerusalem - May 11, 2022 in Yen) was a Palestinian-American journalist who worked as a correspondent on Al Jazeera. He was shot in Jenin on the West Bank on May 11, 2022, while reporting on Israeli raids on a refugee camp. Al Jazeera accuses the Israeli army of shooting.
Life and career
Abu Akleh was born in Jerusalem in 1971 to a Christian family. He first studied architecture but then ended up studying journalism at Yarmuk University in Jordan. After graduation, he returned to Palestine and worked for several media outlets. In 1996, he became a correspondent for Al Jazeera, which was founded the same year. He gained fame among other things by reporting on the second intifada in 2000 and the Gaza wars in 2008, 2012 and 2014. He was one of the channel’s best-known journalists.
