The eruption of Tambora in 1815 was a volcanic eruption that took place in the area of present-day Indonesia. The effects were very extensive and long-lasting. At its worst, the sound could be heard about 2,500 kilometers away. The mountain did not subside until a few years later. The event is possibly the only VEI-7 class eruption in history.
