Athlete of the Year is an honorary mention awarded by the Association of Sports Journalists since 1947. Since 2008, the award has been presented in connection with the Finnish Sports Gala. Until then, the selection was unveiled at an event at the turn of the year. The Young Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year and Coach of the Year will also be awarded at the event. Prior to joining the Finnish Sports Gala, the event was also awarded the Sports Act of the Year voted by the public, as well as the Athlete of the Year and the Draw of the Year. Cross-country skier Veikko Hakulinen has received the title of Athlete of the Year most often four times.
