World Health Organization
The World Health Organization (WHO) is a United Nations organization focusing on human health, founded in Geneva on April 7, 1948. At its initiative, World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7. The mission of the World Health Organization is to ensure good health for all. The organization’s charter defines health as a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease. Its main task is to combat diseases, especially major communicable diseases. The World Health Organization coordinates international efforts to combat SARS, malaria and AIDS, among others, and develops vaccines. In addition, it has projects to reduce smoking, for example.
The WHO uses a six-point scale to assess the pandemic risk of viral diseases of animal origin.
The decision-making body of the World Health Organization is the World Health Assembly, which is attended by delegations from member countries. The meeting has a specific pre-determined health agenda. The main purpose of the meeting is to define the operating principles of the organization, appoint the director general, supervise the financial activities and approve the budget.
The Executive Board of the Organization consists of 34 technically qualified members elected for three-year terms. The annual meeting is held in January, when members decide on the agenda for the decision-making body meeting.
In May 2017, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus from Ethiopia was appointed WHO Director General. His predecessor was Margaret Chan from Hong Kong, who started on November 9, 2006 and was appointed in May 2012 for a five-year extension that ended on June 30, 2017. source more precisely?
