The 2021 coach crash in Bulgaria occurred on 23 November 2021 at 2:02 a.m. local time when a North Macedonian coach crashed and caught fire in western Bulgaria. The accident happened on the Struma highway near the village of Bosnek, southwest of Sofia. Forty-six people died in the crash, including twelve children, and seven other passengers survived.
The section from Dolna Dikanya to Dragichevo of the Struma highway was temporarily closed following the accident.
In 2019, Bulgaria had one of the highest road fatalities in the European Union. After the accident, the mayor of the nearby town of Pernik told local media that accidents were common there.
France 24 reports that the motorway had been recently renovated with funds from the European Union, but that a road safety association had reported to the authorities that "this portion included very steep passages, with no dividing line".
A coach, part of a convoy of four carrying North Macedonian tourists returning to the capital Skopje after a holiday weekend in Istanbul, crashed into a highway near the Bulgarian village of Bosnek. The vehicle struck a highway barrier before or after catching fire. Forty-six people died in the accident, including twelve children. The majority of the other victims were between 20 and 30 years old. Bulgarian Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov (bg) described “a terrifying scene” and bodies “entangled and reduced to ashes”. Seven passengers managed to escape through the windows and were recovered in critical conditions with severe burns. A piloting error or a technical malfunction could be the cause of the accident. The majority of the victims were Albanian citizens of North Macedonia. A Belgian national is also one of the survivors.
The coach was registered with the Besa Trans tourist agency.
