April 1st : in Afghanistan, two bombs planted by Daesh's Khorasan province exploded on a playground in Herat, killing 5 people and injuring around 30 others; in Ukraine, photos and videos attesting to a massacre of civilians during the Russian occupation of the town of Boutcha (resumed the day before) began to circulate massively on social media; in Serbia, an explosion in the Čitluk mine kills 8 miners and injures around 20 others; in Sri Lanka, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declares a state of emergency in response to demonstrations that are strewn across the country against a backdrop of economic and political crisis. April 3: legislative elections and referendum in Hungary, the Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wins the legislative elections for the fourth consecutive time; presidential election in Costa Rica (2nd round), Rodrigo Chaves Robles wins the second round of the presidential election; presidential election and legislative elections in Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić is re-elected President of the Republic and his political coalition "For our children" retains the relative majority despite a clear setback. April 6: In Burkina Faso, former President Blaise Compaoré is found guilty of complicity in the murder of the country's first president, Thomas Sankara. April 7: the lawyer and magistrate Ketanji Brown Jackson is appointed judge of the Supreme Court of the United States, becoming the first black woman to sit in this institution; the 11th emergency special session of the UN General Assembly adopts a resolution which suspends Russia from its membership of the UN Human Rights Council in retaliation for the massacres attributed to it in the context of its invasion of Ukraine. April 8: deadly floods in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa; in Ukraine, at least fifty civilians are killed in the bombardment of Kramatorsk station, attributed to Russian forces. April 9: Legislative elections in The Gambia. April 10: presidential election in France (1st round), Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen qualify for the second round; recall referendum in Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador remains president after the first recall referendum; in Pakistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan is dismissed by a vote of no confidence in the National Assembly; in South Ossetia-Alania, Anatoli Bibilov and Alan Gagloïev qualify for the second round of the presidential election. April 14: The flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the cruiser Moskva, sinks after an explosion off the coast of Ukraine. April 19: Presidential election in East Timor (2nd round), José Ramos-Horta is elected. April 20: the United States signs an agreement with Panama to help stop illegal immigration. in Russia, the RS-28 Sarmat, intercontinental ballistic missile, is fired for the first time. April 21: the East African Community agrees to set up a regional military force in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in an attempt to end the conflicts there. April 24: presidential election in France (2nd round), Emmanuel Macron is re-elected against Marine Le Pen; parliamentary elections in Slovenia. April 25: takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk. April 28: the Parliament of Montenegro approves the new minority government led by Dritan Abazović. April 30: partial solar eclipse in the South Pacific, Chile and Argentina; end of the 2022 Women's Six Nations Tournament; official end of the 2021-2022 hurricane season in the south-west Indian Ocean (except for Mauritius on May 15).
