The Davis Cup 2020 is the 109th edition of this professional men's tennis tournament by nations.

Qualifying phase

The qualifying phase takes place the first weekend of March and confronts 24 teams: the 12 teams that participated in the group phase of the previous edition and who neither qualified for the semi-finals nor invited by the ITF and the 12 teams that won the 2019 continental play-offs (Europe / Africa (6 teams), America (3 teams) and Asia / Oceania (3 teams) zones). Twelve teams are designated seeds according to the classification of the end of the year 2019. The matches are formed by drawing lots. The two teams invited by the ITF to participate directly in the finals are France and Serbia, respectively in the lead and 7th in the ranking of nations. Each meeting takes place over two days, in five matches (four singles and one double) in two winning sets. As soon as a team has won three matches, it is qualified for the finals.

Final phases

The directly qualified teams are Spain, title holder, Canada, finalist of the previous edition, Great Britain and Russia, semi-finalists in 2019. While the entire competition was to take place in Madrid, the organizers decided to organize the group stage of this 2nd edition as well as the quarter-finals in 3 European cities: the Madrid Arena in Madrid hosts groups A and B, two quarter-finals as well as the semi-finals and the final; the Olympia-Halle in Innsbruck hosts groups C and F and a quarter-final; The Pala Alpitour in Turin hosts groups D and E and a quarter-final. All matches take place on the same surface.


Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ITF in agreement with the organizer, Kosmos Tennis, has decided to postpone the final phase of the 2020 edition as well as all play-offs and continental groups matches to 2021.


We note the packages of the American Taylor Fritz, of the Australian Jordan Thompson, who is recovering from Covid-19, of the Canadians Félix Auger-Aliassime, injured in the knee, and Denis Shapovalov, advancing a need for rest, of the Croatian Borna Ćorić, of the Spaniards Carlos Alcaraz, tested positive for Covid-19 the day before his entry into the running, and Roberto Bautista-Agut, injured in the abdominals, of the French Ugo Humbert, suffering from significant fatigue, and of the Italian Matteo Berrettini , injured adductor. To compensate for these forfeits, Mardy Fish, the captain of the American team, called Frances Tiafoe. Australia team captain Lleyton Hewitt called Alex Bolt. Frank Dancevic, the Canada team captain, called Steven Diez. Vedran Martić, the captain of the Croatian team, called Nino Serdarušić. Sergi Bruguera, the captain of the Spanish team, called Pedro Martínez and Albert Ramos-Viñolas. Sébastien Grosjean, the captain of the France team, called Adrian Mannarino and Hugo Gaston at first before retaining only Mannarino. Finally, Filippo Volandri, the captain of the Italy team, called Simone Bolelli. We also note the notable absences of the German and world number 3 Alexander Zverev, who, since the change of format of the Davis Cup, decides to boycott the competition, of the Australian Nick Kyrgios, that Lleyton Hewitt, captain of the Australian team, preferred not to select, of Austrian Dominic Thiem, who ended his season in August 2021 due to a wrist injury, of Briton Andy Murray, who chose not to play the Davis Cup this year, and Spain
