Drupadi Murmu (in Hindi: द्रौपदी मुर्मू), born Puti Biranchi Tudu on June 20, 1958 in Uparbeda (Odisha), is an Indian teacher and politician, member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She has been President of India since July 25, 2022.

Biography

Youth, training and academic career

Belonging to the Santal people, Droupadi Murmu was born Puti Biranchi Tudu in Uparbeda, a village in the district of Mayurbhanj in Orissa (now Odisha). A graduate of the Rama Devi women's university in Bhubaneswar, she became a teacher in one of the poorest districts of the country and became known for her commitment to the defense of tribal minorities.

Privacy

She married a banker named Shyam Charan Murmu in 1980 with whom she had two sons and a daughter. Her husband, two sons, mother and one of her brothers died within 7 years from 2009 to 2015. She is a follower of the Brahma Kumaris spiritual movement.

Political career

Involved in politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), she was a member of the Orissa State Legislative Assembly from 2000 to 2009 and Minister of State from 2000 to 2004 in local government. From 2015 to 2021, she served as Governor of Jharkhand.

2022 Presidential Election

Candidate of the National Democratic Alliance, member of the BJP like the outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind as well as the incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Drupadi Murmu wins the presidential election of July 18, 2022 and is invested on the 25th of the same month.

President of India

Drupadi Murmu becomes the second woman to become President of India, as well as the first person of Adivasis origin, that is to say from a tribal minority. She is also the youngest person to become president, as well as the first born after the country's independence in 1947.
