Formation of Santa Maria

The Santa Maria Formation is a Triassic geological formation located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Its geological age straddles part of the Middle Triassic and Upper Triassic, approximately between −245 and −225 Ma (millions of years). This formation yielded an abundant fossil fauna of vertebrates, including the dinosaurs Staurikosaurus, Saturnalia, Pampadromaeus, Gnathovorax and Buriolestes, the latter having been discovered alongside the dinosauromorph Ixalerpeton.
