Lucien Kroll, born March 13, 1927 in Brussels and died August 2, 2022 in the same city, is a Belgian architect. He founded with Simone Kroll the Architecture studio Simone & Lucien Kroll. They are considered to be the founders - from 1960 - of participatory architecture.

Biography

A former student at ENSAV (today the Faculty of Architecture of the Free University of Brussels) and at the International Higher Institute of Applied Urbanism, he is a founding member of the Institute of Industrial Aesthetics. He is notably the author of an important part of the Woluwe-Saint-Lambert campus of the Catholic University of Louvain. The main building of the site is the medical centre, “la mémé”, which recalls a slum by the use of multiple materials, lack of symmetry, a chaotic appearance and different colors. In 1982, he also designed the Alma metro station. He is one of the few architects to find favor in the eyes of the Austrian designer Hundertwasser, famous for his architectures and his radical ecological manifestos. Lucien Kroll is the uncle of cartoonist Pierre Kroll.

Some achievements

The Oury house

One of his first works is the Oury house, a single-family dwelling located at 137 Voie de Liège in Embourg. It was built between 1962 and 1963 on behalf of Mr. Oury, a former wood importer. As this is also the material of choice for his house, he does not, however, renounce brick and concrete for the load-bearing walls which form four regular spans. The L-shaped plan of the house opens very widely to the south, while the staircase and the corridors which distribute the rooms are thrown to the north. The balcony, as well as the overhanging roof, have been designed to prevent overheating in summer.
