Paul De Knop, born November 12, 1954 in Antwerp and died August 4, 2022, was a professor and then rector of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel between 2008 and 2016. He replaced Professor Benjamin Van Camp as rector, and was followed by the Professor Caroline Pauwels.

Biography

Studies

De Knop studied at the Royal Athenaeum in Antwerp and then went to study at the VUB.

Career within the VUB

After obtaining the title of doctor in physical education and sports, he teaches sports management and sports sociology. In 2008, he was elected rector of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. In 2016, Caroline Pauwels succeeded him in this post and De Knop decided to resume his post as professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy. As a former student of the university, he regularly participates in certain student activities. He was baptized in the student circle "Mesacosa" (contraction of the Latin phrase mens sana in corpore sano).

Awards and Accolades

In 2013, he received the title of doctor honoris causa at the University of Antwerp.
