Wikipedia in French is the edition of Wikipedia in French language. The space of Wikipedia in French was created on May 11, 2001. The first known version of Wikipedia in French was born on May 19, 2001 at 1:05 a.m. The first three articles are of a scientific nature and date from August 4, 2001. However , it is on March 23, 2021, that Wikipedia in French officially celebrates its 20th anniversary. It reached one million articles on September 23, 2010, two million on July 8, 2018 and had 2,424,289 articles on May 20, 2022. It is in 5th position in number of articles, after the editions in English, Cebuano, German and Swedish. According to Wikimedia statistics, the French language edition of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia accounted for 4.6% of the number of page views in November 2017. This makes it the 6th most consulted language edition of Wikipedia after the French editions. English language (48.8%), then Spanish (7.3%), Japanese (6.3%), German (6.2%) and Russian (6.2%). In December 2014, the French-language Wikipedia encyclopedia was consulted 68.4% by people connecting to it from France, 6.2% from Canada, 4.2% from Belgium, 2.6% from Morocco, 2.6% from Algeria, 2.4% from Switzerland, 1.4% from Tunisia, 1.2% from UK, 1.1% from Germany, 1, 0% from the United States, 0.5% from the Netherlands and 0.5% from Reunion. The rest, 7.9%, comes from countries each representing less than 1% of consultations.
