1 January - France takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Slovenia. January 2 Protests begin in the town of Zsanaozen in Kazakhstan over the abolition of the car gas (LPG) price cap and a sharp rise in gas prices. Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has announced his resignation, citing the inability to form a government since his re-election in November and giving him the opportunity to make the transition to a “civilian democratic country”.
