2022-2023 UEFA Nations League

Article

July 5, 2022

The 2022–2023 UEFA Nations League will be the third UEFA Nations League, which is a football tournament organized by the European Football Confederation and open to the senior men's national football teams of the 55 UEFA member countries. The group stage matches will be played in June and September 2022, the knockout stage in June 2023, and the qualifiers in March 2024.

Conduct

The national teams of the 55 UEFA member countries are divided into four leagues, with 16 teams in leagues A, B and C, and four groups of four each. 7 teams participate in League D, which are divided into two groups, one with four teams and the other with three teams. The teams were placed in each league based on the overall ranking of the 2020-2021 announcement. Each team plays six matches in its group, except for one group in League D, which only plays four. The teams will play a round robin on double match days in June and September 2022. The winner of the four groups of the A league will enter the direct knockout stage to be held in June 2023, where there will be four matches: two semi-finals, the bronze match and the final. The pairing of the semi-finals is decided by drawing lots. The location of the final four is chosen from among the four advancing teams. The winner of the A league wins the UEFA Nations League. The teams are promoted or relegated to the higher or lower leagues based on their rankings. The group winners from three leagues, leagues B, C and D, are promoted, while the bottom of the group in leagues A and B are relegated. Since there are four groups in League C and two in League D, therefore, the two eliminated teams in League C will be decided by a qualifier in March 2024. Based on the overall ranking, among the last four places in the C league, the first ranked plays the fourth ranked and the second ranked plays the third ranked. The winner of the two pairings is decided in a round-robin system (the higher ranked plays at home in the second match). The team that scores more goals wins and stays in the C league, the loser is relegated to the D league. If the overall result is a draw, then 2x15 minutes of extra time will follow after the end of the regular playing time of the second match. If the score is still equal after the 2x15-minute extra time, a penalty shootout will take place.

Ranking in group

If two or more teams are in a group with the same points, the order is determined based on the following points: more points scored in matches played between teams with the same standings; better goal difference in matches played between the same teams; more goals scored in matches played between teams with the same standings; more away goals scored in matches played between teams with the same standings; If 1–4. based on points, the teams are still in the same position, then 1-4. points must be reapplied until the order can be decided. If this does not decide either, then paragraphs 6–10. points decide the order; better goal difference in all matches; more goals scored in all matches; more away goals scored in all matches; more wins in all matches; more away wins in all matches; lower Fair Play score (1 point for a yellow card, 3 points for a red card after two yellow cards, 3 points for an immediate red card, 4 points for an immediate red card after a yellow card); better ranking when qualifying for the 2022-2023 UEFA Nations League.Note
