Triangle of Sadness (original title: Triangle of Sadness) is a 2022 Swedish satirical film directed by Ruben Östlund. Starring Harris Dickinson, Charlie Dean and Woody Harrelson. The filming of the film was paused twice in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation and won the Palme d'Or. It is scheduled to hit theaters on October 7, 2022. The film consists of three connected parts that take place in the world of fashion, on a luxury yacht and on an uninhabited island.

Making the movie

The project was first announced by director Ruben Östlund in June 2017 after his film The Square won the Palme d'Or at the 70th Cannes Film Festival the previous month. He said the film would be titled Triangle of Sadness, a "savage" satire set in the world of fashion and the uber-rich, with themes of "appearance as capital" and "beauty as currency". According to the filmmaker, the title refers to a term used by plastic surgeons to describe a troublesome wrinkle that appears between the eyebrows, which can be corrected with botox in 15 minutes. Casting took place from August to November 2018 in Berlin, Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles and It continued in the cities of Gothenburg and in March 2019 in Moscow. The field search began in January 2019 and continued intermittently until October 2019. From November 2019 to the first half of February 2020, Östlund finalized the final details of the film's preparation. On February 4, 2020, it was announced that Triangle of Sadness would begin principal photography on February 19 in Sweden and Greece, marking the start of a 70-day shoot. The cast would include Harris Dickinson, Charlie Dean and Woody Harrelson. About 120 actors were considered for the role, which eventually went to Dickinson. Filming also took place on other Greek islands, in Sweden's Trollhättan on the Film i Vast stage, and in the Mediterranean Sea on Christina O, the former Aristotle Onassis yacht Jackie Kennedy. only the initial 37% of recordings were completed. The follow-up work lasted a total of 22 months. According to the actors, Östlund took an average of 23 shots for each scene.


The film had its world premiere on May 21, 2022 at the Cannes festival, where it won the Palme d'Or. Shortly thereafter, Neon acquired the film's North American distribution rights for $8 million, winning the bidding against A24, Searchlight Pictures/Hulu, Focus Features, and Sony Pictures Classics. Thanks to the popularity of lead actress Dolly de Leon in the Philippines, TBA Studios acquired the film's exclusive Philippine distribution rights.
