The president is the head of a state or some division of it, typically in democracies, republics, or dictatorships. The title is also widely used in the world of companies and other social groups. The Hungarian word, like the English president (Latin prae- "before" + sedere "to sit"), originally denoted a person who directs the conversation at a ceremony or a meeting. The democratic political system in which the president has significant power , is called a presidential system. In semi-presidential systems, the president also has relatively great power, but governs together with the prime minister.
