Roland Sallai

Roland Sallai (Budapest, May 22, 1997 –) is a Hungarian national football player, playing for Freiburg in the Bundesliga. His father, Tibor Sallai, is a former NB I player, and his uncle, Sándor Sallai, is a national team footballer. He participated in the 2015 U20 World Cup as a member of the Hungarian U20 national football team.

Roland Sallai's talent was already noticed at the 2012 Nike Premier Cup European Final in Lodz, which coincided with the U15 Club World Cup, at the Puskás Academy, which finished 12th in the field of 20. Playing as an attacking midfielder, Sallai also scored a goal in that tournament, as well as in all age groups from U13 onwards, scoring a total of 285 goals in the MLSZ competition system. He made his debut in the top flight at the age of 17, on August 7, 2014, in a match against Pécsi Mecsek FC. On September 14, 2014, in his second league match, he scored his first NB I goal against FTC. In the 2014-15 season and the following season, he played in 47 championships and scored three goals, but the Puskás Academy was relegated from the top flight.


On July 30, 2016, he was loaned to Palermo, who had an option to buy him for 2.5 million euros after the end of the season. After Norbert Balogh, a year older than him, Sallai became the second Hungarian player for the Sicilian team. He made his debut in the first round of the 2016-2017 Italian Championship against Sassuolo, coming on as a substitute in the 69th minute. On October 27, he also came on as a substitute in the league match against Udinese Calcio in the 60th minute, and after twenty-two minutes he was sent off with a second yellow card. He scored his first league goal on March 19, 2017 at Udinese's home. His team still took the lead with his goal, but the home team reversed and won 4-1. Sallai became the first Hungarian goalscorer in Seria A after six years, before Gergely Rudolf could celebrate on March 13, 2011 as a Bari player against AC Milan.


On August 28, 2017, he was signed by Cypriot APÓ Ellínon, who is also interested in the group stage of the Champions League. Sallai signed for four years. On September 9, he made his debut for his new team against Néa Szalamína Ammohósztu, and scored his first goal in the Cypriot league in the 27th minute. He also provided an assist in the match, and was replaced in the 75th minute, his team won 4–1. On September 13, 2017, he made his debut in the Champions League at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, spending 60 minutes as a starter in the group match against Real Madrid. On October 21, in the eighth round of the championship, he scored his second goal of the season, but his team lost 3–1 and was defeated by AÉK Lárnakas. On November 26, Olimbiakósz scored a double and assisted Igor de Camargo in a 6–1 win over Lefkoszías. In the next round, against Ermisz Aradippu, he scored another goal, his team won the match 2-1. On January 7, 2018, he scored in the 4-0 winner against Alkí Oróklini. On February 24, in the 19th round of the championship, Olimbiakósz was again effective against Lefkoszías, his team won 3–2. On April 22, APÓ Ellínon scored his team's second goal in the away match against Larnakas, winning the match 3-1. In the 36th round, APÓ Ellínon won the championship by defeating Ammohósztu in Anórthos.


On August 30, 2018, the president of APÓ Ellínon confirmed that Sallai will undergo medical tests in Freiburg after they agreed with the German team on the transfer of the player. The next day, he was officially reported to Sallai Freiburg
