András György Schöpflin, George Schöpflin (Budapest, 24 November 1939 - 19 November 2021) Hungarian historian, political scientist, university professor, Member of the European Parliament (2004–2019).

Studies

He left for Britain with his family in 1950 and completed his schooling there. He was admitted to the Faculty of Law at the University of Glasgow in 1957, where he graduated in 1962 and then studied for a year at the College of Europe in Bruges.

Teaching career

In 1963 he was a researcher at the Chatham House International Relations Research Institute in London and then a BBC journalist from 1967 to 1976. At that time he was a professor of political history in Eastern and Central Europe at the London School of Economics, and in 1994 he was a professor at the Institute of Slavic and Eastern European Studies at the University of London. From 1998 to 2004, he was Professor Jean Monnet. From 1984, the East European Reporter. was the editor of a journal. In 1996, he received the Prize for Minorities. His research interests include nationalism and national identity, as well as the issue and relationship of national minorities.

Public career

He joined Fidesz in 2003. In 2004, he ran on the party's European Parliament list and won a seat. He was a member of the European Parliament until 2019. He was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and an alternate member of the Constitutional Affairs Committee. He returned home from Britain in 2004. In 2005, he was a member of the National Consultative Board launched by Viktor Orbán. In 2007, he stated that he would not hold the post of Foreign Minister in a possible right-wing government.

Family

He is the grandson of Aladár Schöpflin, a critical translator, and the writer Gyula Schöpflin. Married, father of three daughters.
