Péter Schmidt (Mezőberény, December 27, 1926 - May 12, 2022) is a Hungarian lawyer, political scientist, jurist, professor at the Faculty of Law of the Eötvös Loránd University from 1980 to 1983, and a member of the Constitutional Court from 1990 to 1996.

Life

Péter Schmidt was born in 1926 in Mezőberény, Békés County, to a family of German descent. His parents were Péter Schmidt and Magdolna Wagner. He completed his elementary school studies in Mezőberény and Békés, and his secondary school studies at the Commercial Secondary School in Békéscsaba. Between 1946 and 1947 he was a folk college student, graduated in 1947 and enrolled in the administrative department of the József Nádor University of Technology and Economics. From September 1948 he was a student of the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Loránd University, where he was a demonstrator of the Department of Constitutional Law headed by János Beér. He graduated in law in 1951 and became a postgraduate student at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and then an assistant professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs. From October 1959 he taught part-time at the Faculty of Law of the Eötvös Loránd University, and in 1967 he was appointed a full-time associate professor. Between 1971 and 1980, in addition to his university teaching career, he worked part-time at the Institute of Social Sciences. He dealt primarily with the theory of civil rights and the constitutional problems of suffrage. In 1980 he became the dean of the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Loránd University, and he held the position until 1983. He was elected a member of the Constitutional Court by the National Assembly in 1990, and was a member of the panel from July 2, 1990 to December 27, 1996, when he married Julis Margit. They had two children, Péter (1953) and Zsuzsanna (1957).
