Abdul Fattah Isma'il 'Ali al-Jaufi (Arabic: عبد الفتاح إسماعيل علي الجوفي ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ Ismāʿīl) (born in Hugariyah District, Ta'izz, South Yemen, July 1939-died in Aden (now Yemeni province) , January 13, 1986 at the age of 46) was a South Yemeni politician. He was educated in Aden, and subsequently he interned at an oil refinery between 1957-1961. 'Abdul Fattah Isma'il is one of the founders of the National Liberation Front, which since 1967 has been the strongest party in South Yemen. It introduced the intellectual theories of Marxism. In 1978 he was appointed Chairman of the Republican Council ( president) of South Yemen as well as secretary of the FPN, which later formed the Yemeni Socialist Party. In this position he introduced the political doctrine of Marxism. Due to health reasons he resigned from all his posts in 1980 and was replaced by Ali Nashir Muhammad. After that he went into exile in Moscow. In October 1985 he was elected to the PSY Politburo and Secretary of the Central Committee, but the crisis had erupted on January 13, 1986, in a bloody struggle in Aden between supporters and opponents of 'Ali Nashir. The clashes lasted for more than a year and left thousands dead. About 60,000 people, including the overthrown 'Ali Nasir, fled to North Yemen.
