Ignatius Kutu Acheampong. 1986 - A month-long clash takes place in Aden, South Yemen between supporters of Ali Nasir Muhammad and Abdul Fattah Ismail, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives. 1991 - Soviet troops attack Lithuanian independence supporters in Vilnius. 1992 - Japan apologizes for forcing Korean women into sexual slavery during World War II. 1998 - Alfredo Ormando commits an act of self-immolation to stage an anti-homophobia protest in front of St. Peter's Basilica. 1999 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls basketball club announces his retirement (a second time—which is later canceled again). 1999 - Asteroid (137108) 1999 AN10 discovered. 2001 - An earthquake hits El Salvador. More than 5,000 people died. 2008 - The last book in the legendary Harry Potter series is published in Indonesia. 2012 – The cruise ship Costa Concordia runs aground in shallow water near Isola del Giglio, Italy, 17 people are killed.
