1582 - Due to the observance of the Gregorian calendar, this day of the year becomes absent in Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain. 1913 – The Senghenydd Colliery disaster, Britain's worst coal mining accident occurs, and claims the lives of 439 miners. 1933 - Nazi Germany withdrew from the League of Nations. 1949 – Chinese Civil War: Chinese Communist forces occupy the city of Guangzhou (Canton), in Guangdong, China. 1952 – Korean War: United Nations and South Korean forces launch Operation Showdown against the Chinese stronghold in the Iron Triangle which becomes the Battle of Triangle Hill, the largest and bloodiest battle of 1952. 1962 – Cuban Missile Crisis begins: U-2 Reconnaissance Planes and pilots from the US Air Force fly over the island of Cuba and take photos of Soviet Union missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads being installed and erected in Cuba. 1968 - The first television broadcast from space is delivered from the Apollo 7 manned aircraft. 1973 - In the Thammasat student uprising in Thailand, as many as 100,000 people protest against the military rule of Thanom Kittikachorn; 77 killed and 857 injured by Royal Thai soldiers. 1981 - Hosni Mubarak is sworn in as President of Egypt, a week after the assassination of Anwar Sadat. 2016 - The night of the 2016 Panasonic Gobel Awards, held at the XXI Djakarta Theater, Jakarta.
